Compass Clinical Associates is a dynamic multidisciplinary team working together to serve the mental health needs of our Central Iowa. For 30 years, we have been serving Central Iowans with the finest mental health treatment. Our services include individual and family psychotherapy, psychological testing, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment program for depression. We have added new clinicians to our team as well. Please look for the “Our Providers” menu at the top of this website. Compass’ beautiful state-of-the-art facility is located at 2500 82nd Place in Urbandale.
Three Urbandale addresses for TMS care are on our map, with offices on 70th Street and on 82nd Place. Being in the northwest Des Moines metro, these offices draw patients from Johnston, Clive, Grimes, Waukee, West Des Moines, and Des Moines itself, plus smaller towns across central Iowa that drive in on I-35 and I-80.
TMS usually works alongside the care you already have. Your antidepressant and your therapist typically stay part of the plan during the course. Your TMS provider will ask about every prescription, since a few can change seizure risk, and may coordinate with your prescriber. Bring an up-to-date medication list to every check-in so the team can read how you are responding.
Sessions feel more like a routine appointment than a procedure. You sit back in a chair, awake, while the coil taps on your scalp in short trains of pulses. The clicking is loud enough that you wear earplugs. A standard visit lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, a theta-burst visit only minutes. Afterward you can drive back to work, home, or school pickup.
Winter weather in central Iowa can slow I-35/80 and Hickman Road, so ask how each clinic handles storm closures. A course means near-daily weekday trips over six weeks or so, and many Urbandale patients fit them into a lunch hour or before work. DART buses serve parts of Urbandale, but most people drive, and suburban office lots usually make parking easy.
In Urbandale and the greater Des Moines area, providers may check whether TMS fits Depression, ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar. TMS is primarily FDA-cleared to treat depression, notably when medications have not done enough. You will learn if it suits you after an evaluation.
Iowa Medicaid (IA Health Link), Medicare, TRICARE, and private plans such as Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and UnitedHealthcare may cover depression-focused TMS if you qualify. Most require prior authorization. The clinic can verify benefits with your insurer before you schedule.
Some patients drive 30 minutes or more from smaller towns in central Iowa. Because treatment repeats every weekday for weeks, think about gas, time off work, and winter roads. It is worth asking whether the clinic offers theta-burst sessions, which take only a few minutes.
Some devices are FDA-cleared for depression in teens ages 15 and older, used along with medication. Not every clinic treats teens. Call ahead, ask about age limits, and plan to have a parent or guardian attend the evaluation.
Usually you will not. Nothing sedates you, you are alert the whole time, and you can drive right away. Some people have a mild headache or scalp soreness early in the course, which often fades. Seizures are very uncommon. Many Urbandale patients go straight back to work.
