We are proud to announce that, as of July of this year, our center has been providing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for over five years! Emerald Psychiatry & TMS Center provides behavioral health services throughout the state of Ohio. We deliver crucial behavioral health services through both traditional in-person therapies and virtual, telepsychiatry (telehealth) treatments.

What is TMS?

For people who are unfamiliar with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS, this is a new medical technology that has produced promising results in the treatment of medication-resistant depression. TMS, also known as rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation), received FDA approval in October 2008. It is now seen as a valuable therapy for the treating Major Depressive Disorder.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive and non-systemic treatment that utilizes MRI strength magnetic pulses. These pulses work to stimulate areas of the brain known to be hypoactive in patients with depression. As a new treatment option, TMS is a highly successful therapy for Major Depressive Disorder for adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication.

While the American Psychiatric Association has stated that they would consider using TMS therapy after one failed trial of a first line antidepressant medication, most insurance companies require 2 or more failed trials of antidepressant medications prior to authorizing TMS therapy. Clinic studies show that the response rate to TMS therapy exceeds that of medication-based treatments.

As a newer treatment, TMS is non-systemic which means that it is not absorbed by the body as medications. There is no need to use sedation during a TMS treatment so there are almost no side effects. Since no anesthesia is needed, patients are awake and alert during the treatment.

This creates a very non-invasive treatment option for patients experiencing severe depression. Since there is no required use of anesthesia, individuals can quickly resume normal daily activities and more easily fit TMS treatments in their day-to-day schedule. Additional benefits include the fact that TMS therapy is non-addictive and has fewer side effects when compared to antidepressant medications.

In some instances, patients can experience light pain or headache near the area of treatment. However, in these cases patients can use an over-the-counter analgesic such as ibuprofen or Tylenol. Currently, most patient’s health insurance plans include coverage for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatments.

If there is a question as to whether TMS would be appropriate for you, we recommend scheduling an evaluation for TMS therapy to consider the options available to you.
